Suit Up: What should your Groom Wear?
Leading up to the wedding day, there are a bounty of choices to be made: colors, flowers, invitations, and perhaps most importantly, the wedding dress. However, one detail that often takes the backburner is what the men are wearing. Yes, perhaps the bride goes with a gaggle of girls to the bridal boutique, sip champagne, and take spins in lace-clad dresses, but the men deserve a little spotlight too!
Depending on the dress code for your wedding, there are a lot of decision to be made when picking out your suit or tuxedo for the big day. Below we’ve put together some of our favorite trends, each for different levels of attire.
Black Tie Wedding – Black Tuxedo
This is perhaps the least flexible category, but it does mean a bowtie is in order and you can choose some spiffy cufflinks to go along with your white tuxedo shirt. While the colors should stick to the traditional black and white, there are options with accessories. From the cufflinks to perhaps some patterned socks, add your own personality with fun accessories that have a personal meaning to you.
Cocktail Wedding – 9 to 5 Plus
With this category, think of your perfect work suit. Now add a funky bowtie that coordinates with your pocket square, complimenting your dress shirt. Your suit color should be dark neutrals, staying in the black and blue range. If you’re going to do a patterned tie or bowtie, stick with a solid color pocket square and shirt, just so you have a little accent. Mixing and matching patterns should only be attempted by the incredibly brave… But maybe that’s you! Just be careful not to look like an optical illusion. Essentially, upgrade that work suit out of the corporate world and into something a little more fun!
Casual Wedding – No, You Cannot Wear Flip Flops
The term casual can be misleading, but it does not mean a t-shirt and jeans. At the very least, it’s a fun colored suit, patterned shirts, and straying away from black attire where you can. Yes, casual may insinuate a day at the beach or a backyard BBQ, but dress to match the moment! Getting married is a pretty remarkable time and your clothing choices should reflect that. Think about the location of the wedding, too. Garden wedding? Floral tie! Mountain top wedding? Stick to browns and earth tones!
Our general advice when it comes to men’s fashion for weddings is have fun! There are a plethora of choices out there, including fabric types, from corduroy vests to velvet coats, funky shoes like brown oxfords, blue wing tips, even suede boots, and so many more options.
Whatever you do, whether it’s going out with your groomsmen to look at suits together or you’re browsing alone, make sure that everything fits properly (and yes that may mean visiting a tailor) and don’t clash with the colors of your wedding. Your wedding day garb is almost as important as the bride’s dress and completes the entire aesthetic of the day. Plus, it’s going to be in photographs for years to come 😉
Happy shopping!
